The Issue

This is a campaign to save an unfortunate elephant named “Sivasankaran” who is living a miserable life at the very tender age of 18 when otherwise he should have been happily enjoying his life. He was donated to the Parassala Sreemahadevar Temple at Trivandrum years ago. He is completely denied the minimum basic facilities for atleast a meagre survival which is a shelter to protect him from sunlight and rains as he is always tied on a coconut tree. Since his own mahout has now been absconding for 3 weeks, for name sake there is a mahout whom Sivasankaran cannot tolerate due to the severe torture he was subjected to. When it comes to food, it is also partially denied with only a little for his mere survival. No bath for a long period now. He is also been accused of musth and violence for years. Thanks to the caring local people whom he always greets with happiness he is still standing on four legs without collapsing. Standing in the middle of dung and dirt with tears in his eyes…he seems to be saying- “No one wants me…even the so called forest and wildlife officers who are paid to protect me don’t even want to punish those who have been torturing me…Can anyone of you help me get away from this wretched place? Or why not think of mercy killing so as to free me from this pathetic life”.

He comes under the jurisdiction of the Divisional Forest Officer Trivandrum (T.Uma IFS, 9447979038) and Forest Range Officer Paruthipally (Satheeshan, 8547600960) who has the power to implement provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 for violations of the Kerala Captive Elephant Management Rules 2012 and several other guidelines for managing captive elephants. We gave complaints and informed them many times about his life. Despite seeing prima facie violation of all rules, they refused to even book a case against the Travancore Dewaswom authorities for mishandling and torturing him. They say he is doing well and they are taking care of him very well. May be in their dreams!

We the unfortunate people who don’t have the power to book case or arrest a culprit but can only beg before the officers who are supposed to take action are hereby starting a campaign here with only one slogan:-

“Take Sivasankaran to the Forest Department Rescue Centre and book case against the guilty”

All those out there who have care and affection for him, at least spread this message to as many people as you can and do your bit in saving ‘Sivasankaran’ -our State Animal. Call or write to the Forest Department authorities today.

Thank You
