The Canadian Football League (CFL) has always been more than just a sporting event for me and my family. Growing up, I remember spending countless weekends huddled around the television or at the stadium with my friends and extended family, all united by the thrill and excitement that only CFL games could bring. The unique rules and rich history dating back to 1869 make the CFL an integral part of Canada's identity, creating memorable experiences that sadly seem to be under threat by the actions of the new Commissioner.

In less than a year, the newly appointed CFL Commissioner has exhibited actions that threaten to unravel the fabric of what the CFL represents. For over 150 years, the league has been a symbol of Canadian pride, sportsmanship, and has brought communities together across the nation with thrilling games and unmatched entertainment. This year has been no exception, with countless close games that exhibit the best of what Canadian football has to offer. Despite this, the current leadership appears intent on changing the rules rather than celebrating and preserving the game's cherished traditions.

The Commissioner has flaunted a concerning lack of experience and appreciation for what makes the CFL special. The current moves to change established rules in such a significant sport’s history appear not only ill-considered but detrimental to the game we all cherish. There is a need for a leader who respects and treasures the CFL’s traditions and history, rather than trying to reshape it in a manner that might alienate loyal fans and betray what made us fall in love with the game in the first place.

It is crucial for the CFL to have a Commissioner who embodies the passion, history, and values that reflect the essence of Canadian football. Someone who loves the game as much as the fans do, and who respects the legacy of those who played and watched before us. We need a Commissioner who will honour the past while adeptly navigating the future, rather than someone whose plans might permanently damage the essence of the sport.
