Apr 11, 2025

Note: change.org will solicit a donation from you. Any donation you make will NOT go to us or the John Whitmire fund raising campaign.

John Whitmire is holding a fund raising reception on April 17 that ARTS members will attend. Here is our project for sending an impactful message of support to him:

  • Gather a bunch of checks from people. Doesn't matter if it's $2 or $1000 or anything at all. All the checks probably have a name and address of the maker on them. Put them all in an envelope with a nice letter from ARTS saying the donation is from people who are grateful for his advocacy on 11th Street. ARTS will then hand all collected checks and notes to Mayor Whitmire at his fund raiser.
  • The point of this project is to tell his campaign who and why these donations/notes are being given to him. We are going on the supposition that individual donations and emails may be less effective than a bundle all given for one reason at one time. The bundle represents that many votes.

ARTS is a grassroots group of Republicans, Democrats, Independents and 'none of the above' who have been fighting against the bike lanes and road diet on 11th Street since 2022. This project is intended as a nonpartisan effort to encourage Mayor Whitmire and to let him know he has support to change 11th Street back to what it was (as much as can be done). If you have issues with making a donation to a Democratic mayor, think instead about adding your note of thanks to the bundle. You might also think of it as playing both sides of the divide as do many corporations, law firms, small businesses, etc.

We want to make an impact to let him know that we stand behind him. He is installing a HAWK light at Nicholson (the original ask for that crossing), and hopefully he will remove some or all of the concrete curbs and medians on 11th Street. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. A loud bike lobby is rallying support for his Recall and decrying his removal of bike lanes on Austin St., Houston Ave., Heights Blvd., Montrose Blvd., and they are preemptively protesting the removal of bike lanes on 11th St.

If you are interested in sending a personal check (even a small one - it’s the thought and symbolism that counts) or even just a personal note of thanks, please drop off your checks or thank you notes at C & D Hardware, 314 E. 11th Street, Houston 77008. Checks should be made payable to John Whitmire Campaign.

You can email us at arts.htx@gmail.com any time.

We truly appreciate your help to accomplish this goal.

Many thanks to all.
