ENG- IES Bendinat (Maiorca; Spain) is working on the international project "Let's Save the Islands" alongside La Montagne School (Réunion Island, France) and Escola Básica e Secundária Santa Maria (Azores, Portugal) to achieve the United Nations' declaration of International Day of the Island. The chosen date for this celebration is May 19th.

Climate change is already a reality, and there is no turning back. Its effects can be observed on a global scale. However, we can help mitigate these effects, slow them down, and prepare to adapt our lives to the changes ahead. In this context, education and scientific communication are more
important than ever.

It is essential to raise awareness about islands—not for mass tourism but to ensure their conservation. We believe that if people love them, they will protect them, as islands need recognition and protection.

For many, childhood memories are tied to the sea, playing on the beach, walking along the shore, or fishing with loved ones. Life on an island carries a unique essence, one that connects islanders worldwide in a way that is difficult to explain to outsiders? The fact of living on an island, whatever it may be, imbues us with a special saltiness, which makes all the islanders in the world have a bond that is difficult to explain to those who have not experienced it. 

For this reason, we would like you to join this great challenge and together be able to give visibility to the reality of the island territories and, in some way, reinforce the recognition of insularity, our customs, traditions and ways of living surrounded by the sea.

ESP- POR LA DECLARACIÓN DEL DÍA INTERNACIONAL DE LAS ISLAS

El IES Bendinat (Mallorca, España) colabora en el proyecto internacional "Salvemos las Islas" junto con el Colegio La Montagne (Isla Reunión, Francia) y la Escuela Básica y Secundaria Santa Maria (Azores, Portugal) para lograr la declaración del Día Internacional de las Islas por parte de las Naciones Unidas. La fecha elegida para esta celebración es el 19 de mayo.

El cambio climático ya es una realidad y no hay vuelta atrás. Sus efectos se observan a escala global. Sin embargo, podemos ayudar a mitigarlos, frenarlos y prepararnos para adaptar nuestras vidas a los cambios que se avecinan. En este contexto, la educación y la comunicación científica cobran más importancia que nunca.

Es fundamental concienciar sobre las islas, no para el turismo de masas, sino para garantizar su conservación. Creemos que si la gente las ama, las protegerá, ya que las islas necesitan reconocimiento y protección.

Para muchos, los recuerdos de la infancia están ligados al mar, a jugar en la playa, pasear por la orilla o pescar con sus seres queridos. La vida en una isla tiene una esencia única, una que conecta a los isleños de todo el mundo de una manera difícil de explicar a quienes no la conocen. Vivir en una isla, sea cual sea, nos impregna de una salinidad especial, que crea un vínculo entre todos los isleños del mundo difícil de explicar a quienes no lo han vivido.

Por eso, nos gustaría que te unieras a este gran reto y juntos pudiéramos visibilizar la realidad de los territorios insulares y, de alguna manera, reforzar el reconocimiento de la insularidad, nuestras costumbres, tradiciones y formas de vida rodeadas del mar.
