For pubs Impose a stricter noise inspection and stricter punishments for breaking limits
The Issue
This petition originates from personal frustration and a plea for the consideration of local residents' peace and tranquillity. I reside in the vicinity of a pub where, despite multiple attempts to soundproof my home and numerous complaints to the authorities, the constant thud of bass emanating from the pub's music is a relentless issue that extends far into the night, often lasting until 12:30am over the weekends. This noise violation disrupts sleep and impinges on mental health, a problem echoed by many residents living in similar circumstances.
In an alarming trend, local councils seem to show a glaring blindside to complaints lodged against this noise pollution, invariably siding with the landlords, leaving their citizens in a state of continuous stress and unrest. The WHO identifies environmental noise as harmful, recommending that levels indoors should not exceed 30 A-weighted decibels - that's about as loud as a whisper - for a good night’s sleep (source: WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region, 2018).
We understand that pubs are, in part, defined by their lively atmospheres often accompanied by vibrant music. However, it is of utmost importance that their operations do not infringe upon the rights and mental well-being of their neighbors. This is not a rare, solitary inconvenience - this is a widespread problem demanding immediate attention.
We hereby petition for legislation demanding pubs to also impose a noise limit at 10 pm on the weekends. By adopting this measure, we can provide a much-needed balance between the enjoyment of pub-goers and the peace of neighboring residents.
stricter punishment is needed, having one sound check by the council once in a while isn’t enough as you can get lucky. Putting the sound up once the coast is clear after midnight is just plain disrespectful.
Please sign this petition to promote harmony and respect between social establishments and residential areas. Your signature can help countless citizens safeguard their sleep and mental health.
