For Narnia and For Aslan!
The Issue
ABSTRACT:
We are not impressed.
NETFLIX and GRETA GERWIG believe they have
the freedom to do as they please with the CHRONICLES OF NARNIA.
THEY ARE SORELY MISTAKEN.
WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN US:
Followers of Christ: Stand against the twisting of the Good News and the mockery of Jesus Christ
Parents and Families: Stand against the Meryl Streep/Ziggy Stardust version of "Aslan" and the ideologies being pushed
Students of Literature: Stand against the blatant disrespect of the writings of C.S. Lewis
Conservatives: Stand against the pushing of the Feminist and LGBTQ+ agendas
OUR POSITION:
A great director is not revealed by the ability to create a new version of the story.
Doing so is a simple endeavor.
It is a far more challenging task to remain faithful to the author's original intent while creating - in a new medium - an adaptation that evokes in audiences the same feelings, inspiration, and hope as the book.
By this, a great director proves themselves truly brilliant.
Those of us who love the written stories are not interested in a film which is divorced from the story from which it is supposedly drawn.
NETFLIX and GRETA GERWIG may believe they are being “creative”. In reality, the major alterations to the story are quite the opposite of creativity.
AT BEST, such actions show a severe lack of skill and imagination, demonstrating an inability to remain faithful to the original text.
AT WORST, they reveal a thorough disdain for the author, his work, and the community that surrounds these beloved stories. The community they simultaneously expect to profit from.
GRETA GERWIG has displayed her ability to more closely adapt an author's story in her 2019 film Little Women. Therefore, the only plausible conclusion is that NETFLIX and GRETA GERWIG are intentionally disrespecting this beloved series. Despite GRETA GERWIG'S claim that she is coming from a "place of terror" because she really does "have such reverence for Narnia" (1).
If they desired to be faithful to C.S. Lewis’ works, they would be.
OBJECTION:
Film adaptations make changes. They use creative license. Audiences expect this.
NETFLIX and GRETA GERWIG are not using creative license.
This is a creative heist.
The destruction of what C.S. Lewis gave us must stop.
FINAL STATEMENTS:
DOUGLAS GRESHAM initially contracted with NETFLIX with a vision to adapt the books into a multi-episode series saying it would allow writers to “put the whole book in” (3).
Prior to contracting with NETFLIX, DOUGLAS GRESHAM walked away from The Silver Chair before filming began due to new leadership and a shift to make the film a “girl power action movie” (4).
NETFLIX and GRETA GERWIG are not preserving the book. In truth, their decisions have shown great disrespect toward C.S. Lewis and the entire Narnia community.
This is no way to build an audience for an upcoming film.
They have lost our trust completely.
THEREFORE,
We decline to request modifications to the current trajectory.
We, your target audience, unequivocally call for a complete and total cancellation of the current film and pledge a complete and thorough boycott of this film and all future ones if this petition is not heeded and the film is released
If, upon cancelling the film, NETFLIX desires to pursue making future films, we demand that GRETA GERWIG be removed as director and replaced by someone who will honor the stories we hold so dear.
The CHRONICLES OF NARNIA were entrusted to NETFLIX by the C.S. LEWIS COMPANY. They do not belong to NETFLIX. GRETA GERWIG is not the author of these stories.
Write your own story. Do not destroy the beloved work of a respected author.
We call upon you to respect C.S. Lewis as the brilliant author he was and honor the intent of his writing.
He created Narnia.
He created its characters.
He established its themes.
He established its worldview.
He created the stories that generations of readers have come to love.
Do not hijack the work of C.S. Lewis as you are currently doing.
If you continue: We will NOT attend theater screenings. We will NOT purchase the film. We will contact major theater chains and request they NOT show the film. We are the audience you are expecting a response from. This is our pledged response.
We will collectively hold you to account.
