Food Waste Ends With Us (Digital Pledge)
The Issue
The Issue
Every growing city today suffers from a problem of plenty, eventually buckling under the weight of its own waste.
We've all been there: scoffing and complaining about garbage collectors who are late to collect our unsegregated food waste. Waste that they must toil in, touch every day. Food scraps that we consider "unclean", that we don't even handle. The truth is, this waste does not magically vanish once it leaves your doorstep. It is merely out of sight , and unfortunately, out of mind.
It travels to the outskirts of our cities and to villages, dumped in landfills where toxins leach into the soil and poison water sources. The same borewells laced with this poison irrigate the fields where farmers grow our food. The vegetables and fruits we buy from shops are fed by the pollution we so carelessly created. Thus, the toxins we disdainfully threw away make their way back into our "clean" homes, into our plates and inevitably, into our bodies.
Many people dismiss the thought entirely, believing they "pay taxes" and need not meddle with waste. At the rate our cities are growing, do you think that municipalities alone can keep pace with the mountains of unsegregated waste that our rapidly growing city generates ? The system is already overwhelmed. The responsibility must begin with us.
It is the impoverished communities living near landfills, whose voices are too feeble to be heard whose health is sacrificed so we can keep our homes "clean".
This has to change. This change must begin with YOU!
Course of Action
Approximately 70% of our household waste is organic, yet instead of returning to the soil where it belongs it rots in landfills , releasing greenhouse gases and contributing to climate change. The real solution to this problem begins at our doorstep. If each and every individual segregated their food waste and composted it at source, we would have nourishing gardens and parks instead of sinking heaps and wasting resources.
This vision is closer than it seems because composting is remarkably simple. We know this because we, the Green Warriors, have done it ourselves. We didn't require a large space or expensive equipment and neither do you!
Composting only requires two or three containers stacked in a corner. Into these, we added daily segregated waste from our own homes and from our community. This is then layered with coco peat and lightly sprinkled with microbes , which absorbs excess moisture and speeds up the natural breakdown process. Within a few weeks, what we perceived as foul trash transformed into nutritious fertiliser that can go directly to our gardens. The coco peat itself can be easily sieved out after composting and reused many times, making this a one-time investment that continually yields results. There is no smell, no undue hassle and it takes barely a a minute of your time each day. When we started composting we also encouraged our neighbors to try it and to our surprise, they found it just as easy. Today, instead of handing over their food waste to garbage collectors and contributing to the detriment of their own city, they proudly share stories of the compost that feeds their gardens .
If a family of four composts their food waste at source in Bengaluru, 250-271 kg can be kept out of landfills and can avoid 450 kg CO2 emissions per year.
By pledging today, you are committing to:
- Segregated food waste at home
- Compost food scraps at source
- Spread the word and encourage friends and family to join the movement
Pledge today. Compost today. Own tomorrow.
The future is not in our landfills, it is in our hands.
