Remove Mr. Agustin Herran from FIU Business Hall of Fame

The Issue

Florida International University is dedicated to high-quality teaching, state-of-the-art research and creative activity, and collaborative engagement with its local and global communities. These are some of the reasons I chose to enroll at Florida International University. The university places value in teaching its students to be cognizant of what is transpiring in the community and utilize our voice in creating a world that will be better for the next generation as a result of our efforts.

However, it was recently brought to my attention that a member of the FIU Business Hall of Fame, Agustin Herran, CEO of Sedano’s Supermarkets, still supports the practice of extreme confinement of egg-laying hens in Sedano’s supply chain. How can we elect someone to the FIU Business Hall of Fame when businesses all across the country have listened to its consumers and have placed a public policy to end this inhumane practice to animals?

Battery cages are not only one of the cruelest practices employed on factory farms today but the practice is completely outdated, unsustainable, and even criminalized in countries all over the world and in several U.S. states! Under this system, hens are forced to suffer in cages for the entirety of their short lives without the ability to spread their wings!

It's alarming to think that if Agustin Herran takes such a negligent stance on such an important issue as this, how can he be trusted to represent ethical business choices for our university? Students here at the Florida International University deserve better than to be represented by someone with such a broken moral compass.

Please sign my petition and tell the leadership at Florida International University to remove Agustin Herran out of the FIU Business Hall of Fame!
