Legalize "Pit Bulls"

The Issue

For years now, several states have made the pit bull breed illegal due to being "dangerous" . This petition is to prove that pit bulls are not a dangerous breed, but, in fact are family dogs.

The pit bull was originally bred to "bait" bulls and bears, created in the 19th century primarily for this job. When the bear- and bull- baiting became illegal in 1835, dog fighting took it's place. This breed's determination of obedience and agility made it easy for people looking for strong competitors for dog fighting rings to use this breed of dog. Their objection to bite humans also made it easy to separate the dogs without having to worry about the dog turning on its master.

In reality, pit bulls, like all dogs need early socialization. 3-12 weeks is the preferred socialization period for all breeds of dogs. It is proven that after going through socialization properly and receiving decent amounts of training, the pit bull is a great family companion. This breed loves people wholeheartedly, and believes their size is that equal to a lap dog. Yes, they are alert like watchdogs, and they do bark at the door if someone is there, but they are eager to "greet" their guests, just like any other breed of dog. The only difference is they will defend their families with their lives if they witnessed their family undergoing harm.

If pit bulls were made legal, there could be so many families that own(ed) this breed that could be at peace. This dog breed is unique and caring, so to discriminate against a dog for people's actions is very unfair. The dog isn't aware of right and wrong, for the reason that it wasn't taught by it's owner correctly. Therefore, to treat a breed negatively due to a person's actions is cruel. Everybody should get a second chance, even if it's just a dog.

All in all, the pit bull breed is very misunderstood, and it is very biased to single out a breed of dog, just like it is unconstitutional to discriminate against a human's race, gender, age etc.
