Tampa's urban neighborhoods are currently experiencing a renaissance with new restaurants, parks and amenities, and community involvement bringing new life and vibrancy to these historic neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has plans to widen Interstate 275 through these historic urban core neighborhoods, destroying a community center and garden the community has worked hard over the years to establish. FDOT also plans to add an exit ramp directly in front of Waterworks Park, one of Tampa's newest public amenities that revitalized a spring that feeds into the Hillsborough River and is also located next to Ulele, a popular new restaurant. This area is currently very pedestrian-friendly and safe for bicyclists and pedestrians alike, but the imminent construction of a major interstate off-ramp threatens the very character and fabric of this and other areas near the interstate. Please help us convince FDOT that these neighborhoods around I-275 have changed significantly in the decades since these widening projects were conceived. These neighborhoods have tried to grow around and despite I-275 as residents do their best to make their neighborhoods vibrant, safe, and livable once again. Widening I-275, at a cost of billions of dollars, will do irreparable harm to these neighborhoods that have already been bisected and divided by the interstate in the past. Furthermore, studies show that adding new road capacity does nothing to relieve traffic congestion; on the contrary, it only induces more people to drive.
