Florida Can Grow Smarter: Protect Wildlife, Build Better

The Issue

Save Florida’s Wildlife: Smarter Growth, Stronger Conservation

To: Florida State Legislators, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and Local Decision-Makers

Florida is at a turning point. Our state is one of the most biodiverse in the country, yet rapid and unchecked development continues to displace wildlife, destroy ecosystems, and weaken conservation efforts.

At the center of this issue is the gopher tortoise, a keystone species whose burrows provide habitat for over 350 other species. But this isn’t just about one animal it’s about all of us. Gopher tortoises help control pests, prevent erosion, and regulate flooding. When we lose them, we lose natural protections that benefit both people and wildlife.

Yet, current policies fail to protect them. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approves development permits while also overseeing conservation, creating a conflict of interest where profit takes priority over environmental responsibility. Worse, tortoises that are relocated often face stress, territorial disputes, and high mortality rates, making current mitigation efforts ineffective.

This is bigger than just saving one species it’s about rethinking how we develop in a way that benefits both people and nature.

What We Demand:

✅ Mandatory GPS Tracking (3-Year Minimum): Every relocated tortoise must be tracked to ensure survival and prove conservation efforts work.

✅ 2-to-1 Land Conservation Requirement: For every 1 acre developed, 2 acres of suitable gopher tortoise habitat must be permanently protected.

✅ Independent Oversight of FWC Decisions: FWC should not both permit development and oversee conservation. We demand third-party review of habitat impact assessments and conservation decisions.

A Smarter Approach to Growth & Conservation

🌏 Wildlife Corridors & Habitat Protection: Allowing animals to move safely without being displaced.

🌏Native Landscaping Over Turf-grass: Replacing water-intensive lawns with native plants that support pollinators and reduce flooding.

🌏 Green Infrastructure in Development: Promoting green rooftops, permeable roads, and natural flood mitigation.

🌏 Sustainable Transportation & Energy:  Expanding solar-powered transit and EV infrastructure to reduce pollution.

Why This Matters:

👌🏼Protects Florida’s Wildlife & Natural Beauty

💯Creates Healthier, More Livable Communities

💸Boosts Sustainable Economic Growth & Tourism

⚖️Reduces Flooding & Stormwater Damage
