Fix Werribee Station, Improve V/Line Services and Build a Railway Station at Mambourin
Fix Werribee Station, Improve V/Line Services and Build a Railway Station at Mambourin
The issue
Our western suburbs deserve better public transport
We, the undersigned residents of Werribee, Mambourin, Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and surrounding communities, call on the Victorian Government to deliver a rail network that keeps pace with the rapid growth of Melbourne’s west.
For too long, residents have had to contend with an outdated Werribee railway station, crowded trains, pressure on existing rail services and long journeys to access public transport from developing communities.
Public transport is not a luxury. It connects people to work, education, healthcare, family and essential services. As our population grows, our transport infrastructure must grow with it.
We are calling for three urgent priorities: redevelop Werribee Station, improve regional rail connections and bring a railway station closer to Mambourin residents.
1. Fully redevelop Werribee Railway Station
Werribee Station is a vital transport hub serving thousands of residents. However, the station precinct is outdated and needs substantial improvements to accessibility, passenger facilities and connections with other modes of transport.
Wyndham City Council has identified inadequate commuter parking, poor bus interchange facilities and limited accessibility for people with disabilities. Council has requested $50 million for a redevelopment. <Cite refs={["turn142755search1"]}/>
We call on the Victorian Government to:
Commit funding and a clear delivery timeline for a comprehensive station redevelopment.
Upgrade accessibility, including lifts and accessible routes for wheelchair users, older residents and parents with prams.
Improve station facilities, passenger amenities, lighting, safety and wayfinding.
Modernise the bus interchange and improve connections with local bus services, cycling and walking routes.
Assess commuter parking and traffic management around the station.
Ensure the design can accommodate future passenger growth and increased train services.
Werribee residents should have a modern, accessible and welcoming railway station that reflects the importance of our growing community.
2. Improve V/Line services and distribute passenger demand
Residents across Wyndham rely heavily on rail services to reach Melbourne and regional destinations. Better use of existing rail infrastructure and improved service patterns should be investigated alongside longer-term network upgrades.
In October 2026, Wyndham City Council and the City of Greater Geelong called for a trial of direct Geelong–Werribee passenger rail services by rerouting existing Warrnambool services through Werribee. Their proposal would use existing tracks between Little River and Werribee. <Cite refs={["turn142755search2"]}/>
We call on the Victorian Government to:
Work with Wyndham and Greater Geelong councils to assess and trial the proposed direct Geelong–Werribee rail connection.
Investigate additional suitable V/Line stopping patterns and service frequency to improve connections for western suburbs commuters.
Assess how alternative rail connections could distribute passenger demand more effectively and reduce pressure on heavily used stations and roads.
Publish a long-term plan for rail capacity, reliable services and better connections between the Werribee and Wyndham Vale corridors.
Ensure any changes are supported by timetable, capacity and operational assessments so that improvements for one community do not come at the expense of another.
We want practical improvements using existing infrastructure wherever feasible, alongside the long-term investment needed to support future growth.
3. Build a railway station serving Mambourin
Mambourin is a growing residential community where access to public transport must be planned alongside new housing.
For many residents, reaching an existing railway station can involve additional travel by car or bus before the train journey has even begun. This creates inconvenience for commuters, adds pressure to local roads and can make public transport less practical for people without a car.
We call on the Victorian Government to:
Assess and commit to planning for a new railway station serving Mambourin, based on projected population growth and transport demand.
Investigate the most feasible rail alignment and connection to the existing network, including how a future connection between the Wyndham Vale and Werribee corridors could support the area.
Examine whether a station could be incorporated into future rail corridor planning and development sequencing.
Provide interim improvements to bus services and connections to existing stations while longer-term rail infrastructure is planned.
Publish the planning process, feasibility findings, indicative costs and next steps for delivering better rail access to Mambourin.
A station must be supported by suitable rail infrastructure, service capacity and funding. We therefore ask the government to begin the necessary planning now, rather than allowing transport access to fall further behind residential growth.
4. Plan transport before congestion gets worse
Better rail access can give residents more practical alternatives to driving, but new infrastructure must be supported by reliable services, well-connected buses, safe walking routes and cycling facilities.
We ask the government to coordinate station redevelopment, rail service planning and future housing development so that communities are not left waiting years for the transport connections they need.
Our demands
We ask the Victorian Government to:
Fund and deliver a comprehensive redevelopment of Werribee Railway Station.
Work with local councils to investigate a direct Geelong–Werribee passenger rail trial and other suitable V/Line service improvements.
Begin formal planning and feasibility work for a new railway station serving Mambourin.
Improve interim bus connections and access to existing stations.
Publish clear timelines, funding decisions and progress updates for these priorities.
