Fix the connectivity and safety of Chelsea Station - install a third pedestrian crossing!

The issue

Chelsea station was recently upgraded as part of the Victorian government’s Level Crossing Removal Project. The resulting pedestrian crossings from Chelsea train station to the shops on Nepean Highway are poorly designed, with no crossing directly from the main platform entry / exit. Instead an ugly barrier runs the length to pedestrian crossings in the north and south.

This creates a literal barrier for people to access the Chelsea shops and support local, and there have been instances where people have jumped over the barrier and crossed the road which is incredibly unsafe. It is a very long walk for the elderly, people with a disability, or parents trying to herd young children, and there is no coverage from rain or sun along the footpath.

A third crossing directly at the entry / exit of the platforms across to the shops will increase accessibility of the station, and encourage public transport users to visit Chelsea, and increase safety by reducing the need for people to jump over barriers to cross Nepean Highway.

Locals and advocacy groups such as the Chelsea & Bonbeach Train Station Group have been vocal about the various issues with the current design on Facebook, and local MP Tim Richardson has discussed the matter with the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Minister Horne. The Minister will be visiting Chelsea in late September to see the current layout.

Please sign this petition to show the Minister Horne how many locals are affected by this matter, and to urge her to find the funds to find a solution before the busy summer period.
