Exciting update from the Legislature: January 23, 2026 - Senate Bill 105 was introduced today, sponsored by Senator Harold Pope Jr.! Link to the bill: https://www.nmlegis.gov/Legislation/Legislation?chamber=S&legType=B&legNo=105&year=26 *CALL TO ACTION* This bill will now need the Governor’s action to be considered this session. Please spend a few minutes to: - call (505) 476-2200 - OR send an email through https://www.governor.state.nm.us/contact-the-governor/ To urge the Governor to support families and students by “providing a message” for Senate Bill 105 This is especially important if you are a New Mexico resident! A few ideas that can be shared: - Attendance is very important, but for some students with severe medical conditions or disabilities, absences aren’t a choice; - The current attendance law does not consider disabilities or other conditions and currently penalizes families because of these conditions; - The appropriate manner to address such absences is individually through IEPs or Section 504 plans; - Senate Bill 105 will amend the Attendance for Success Act to provide fair consideration of absences due to disabilities and other unavoidable conditions, while maintaining attendance accountability. Please keep sharing and many thanks for your continued support!
