Fill The Duluth, MN Sustainability Officer Position

Fill The Duluth, MN Sustainability Officer Position

The Issue

Background

The City of Duluth has recently stated its intent to end its hiring process for the currently open Sustainability Officer position. Meanwhile, the state of Minnesota has in statute a goal to attain net zero emissions statewide by 2050, and the City of Duluth has previously committed to city-wide emissions reductions goals as well, as attested and confirmed by both City Council vote and declaration from the Mayor’s office.

Action Petitioned For

We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens of Duluth who urge our leaders to act now to preserve and refill the Sustainability Officer position, which has already proven its immense value. For an annual cost that is just a fraction of its return, this role has brought in well over $50 million in external funding since 2020—many times its budget—while also securing financial savings that make our community stronger and less vulnerable. Cutting this position would not save money; in fact, its vacancy is costing Duluth both financially and strategically. Now more than ever, we need leadership that strengthens our city’s resilience, reduces expenses, and builds a sustainable future for all.
