Rape Culture and Victim Blaming needs to END #WeNeedJustice
The Issue
In 2014, the number of victims of rape in the Philippines was almost ten thousand. Since 2005, there has been an increase in rape incidents in the world with an overall annual incidence of 20.94 percent.
"Ano ba kasi suot mo nung nangyari yun?"
"Lalake kase sila ganun talaga, may pangangailan."
"Di ka naman nagsumbong agad"
These are also some of the never-ending comments that women received after victims gained courage to speak up about their experience of sexual violence.
Victim Shaming has been a contentious topic since then, particularly with women who have been sexually assaulted. We can't let these scenarios happen again and again. Men should be taught to respect women and not to exploit their vulnerability. Women's confidence in clothes is not and will never be an invitation.
Most sexually assaulted women suffer from depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric disorder. Some have preferred silence to preserve calm, though they have a mind full of chaos. Rape Culture is not a matter that can be dismissed. The victims are hurting, and they are being blamed. Sexual harassment occurs more frequently than we thought.
We ought to bring an end to their misery by training ourselves on how to respect one another. Let us be accountable for our actions and our way of thought. Let us put an end to victim blaming and right culture and bring justice to everyone who are sexually abused.
