The concept for the film was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents divorce in 1960. Star Weekend Magazine disputes Spielberg s claim, pointing out that he had graduated from high school in 1965 and began his career as a director in Hollywood in 1969. Spielberg was working simultaneously on these two suburban-based stories: E.T. (as director) and Poltergeist (1982) (as producer) - but while one was a fantasy story, the other was a nightmarish horror story.
