Fighting Fire with Fire
The Issue
Gerrymandering has been a tool of political manipulation for far too long, impacting the fundamental fairness of our electoral process. While both parties have been guilty of leveraging it for gain, the Republican Party has particularly exploited gerrymandering as a strategy to secure election victories.
As a Colorado resident, I'm proud of our state's exemplary redistricting process, which is hailed for its integrity, showcasing independent commissions, constitutional guardrails, and judicial oversight. However, when other states gerrymander their maps to entrench partisan control, the country risks losing fair representation - simply because Colorado follows the rules.
To safeguard our democracy and ensure fair representation, Colorado needs an emergency amendment that permits redistricting outside the traditional 10-year cycle, but only under specific, justified conditions. This amendment would empower Colorado to respond to unprecedented circumstances that threaten our citizens rights for fair and true representation.
Implementing such an emergency mechanism would be an actionable step in protecting the country's electoral integrity. Amending our redistricting laws is not about retaliation or diminishing our state's standards of fairness; it's about adapting to a changing landscape where others may not play by the same rules.
Let's stand united in preserving democracy and empowering Colorado to maintain its hallmark fairness amidst national electoral challenges. Sign this petition to support an emergency amendment for flexible, just, and defensible redistricting in Colorado.
Proposed Petition Text:
We, the undersigned residents of Colorado, call on our state legislators and the Governor to support a constitutional amendment enabling emergency redistricting under the following conditions:
- A federal court finds another state’s maps unconstitutional or in violation of voting rights.
- A clear national imbalance in representation is demonstrated by nonpartisan analysis.
- A supermajority of Colorado’s Independent Redistricting Commission votes to initiate the process.
This amendment must:
- Preserve all existing standards for transparency, competitiveness, and community representation.
- Be initiated solely by the independent commissions—not politicians.
Include judicial oversight and a sunset clause to prevent misuse. - Colorado should not be punished for playing fair. Let’s protect our voice and ensure our districts reflect the will of the people—not the games of other states.
We’re not asking to play dirty—we’re asking to protect Colorado’s voters from being silenced by national manipulation.
