Dear Health Not Hygiene movement,

We are getting closer and closer to losing the term we jointly despise - “menstrual hygiene”.

Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition so far, together we’re calling on WASH United and all organisations to rename World Menstrual Hygiene Day. All 39,881 of you have taken a step towards fighting the persistent menstrual stigma which holds girls, women and all people who menstruate back. Congratulations.

We’ve grown from a handful of passionate advocates back in September 2019 to a powerful movement of nearly 40,000 people.

Together, this year, we celebrated World Menstrual Hygiene Day in our own way. We unofficially celebrated it as World Menstrual Health Day and many others did too. Highlights of this year’s celebration for us included Bloody Good Period’s #MindYourBloodyLanguage campaign and My Period Is Awesome’s No Period Shame campaign. And, a record breaking number of people got involved in this year’s MH Day, WASH United reported that the awareness raising activities reached 411 million people worldwide!

Alas, we cannot stop here. We are reaching out today to tell you that we are committed to continue the fight and campaign for the day to be renamed officially in 2021.

Please continue to sign and share the petition, share your stories and reasons for signing with our networks and let’s shift the menstrual narrative and fight the stigma together.

Onwards and upwards to 2021, the year “menstrual hygiene” drops from the menstrual narrative!
