GM Teimour Radjabov (AZE) won the 2019 FIDE World Cup and qualified for the 2020 Candidates Tournament. After the outbreak of Corona virus, he raised concerns towards the player safety and asked they International Chess Federation (FIDE) to postpone the tournament. FIDE instead asked him to withdraw from the tournament, so he got replaced by GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). However, the tournament was aborted after the first half due to Corona virus related concerns like almost every other ongoing sports competition (e.g. the current NBA season, 2019-20 UEFA Champions League).

FIDE had to admit, that these concerns issued by not only GM Teimour Radjabov but also by one of his opponents, GM Alexander Grischuk, and even former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik (both RUS) were reasonable.

FIDE should compensate Mr Radjabov. Including him into the 2020 Candidates would be impossible for the organizers, but instead he could get the 2022 Wild Card Spot in advance. That would even solve another controversy as many players concerned, there should have been a different and much higher rated player chosen for the 2020 Wild Card spot.
