Kate - Victoria In 2014 at the age of 31 I was diagnosed with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma. By the time I was diagnosed the cancer had already spread throughout my lymphatic system eliminating surgery as a treatment option. The news that mesothelioma was incurable with current treatment options was devastating to me and my husband. The knowledge that I would never get to see my son, aged one, grow up, is something I still refuse to accept. Since that time I have completed two courses of chemotherapy which manages to keep the cancer stable for a short period of time post treatment. While chemotherapy has undoubtedly prolonged my life, its effectiveness declines with each course as the cancer becomes resistant to the drugs. Keytruda is an immunotherapy drug which has shown promise in treating several types of cancers and could in my case both reduce tumour size and increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy in the future, prolonging my life for years beyond my initial prognosis. However because mesothelioma is considered a rare cancer, there has not been sufficient funding to see it approved under the PBS. If I want access to this life saving drug, one that is currently prescribed free under the PBS for melanoma sufferers, my husband and I would need to find approximately $5000 per infusion every 3 weeks! My wish is that all Australians have equal access to new treatments options like keytruda regardless of whether their cancer is considered rare or common.
