(As told to me by his wife) - My husband has been diagnosed with mesothelioma. He was a very active 70 year old before diagnosis. Our hope is that the drug Keytruda will help him. He has undertaken this treatment on a cost share program which means the drug company pays for every alternate dose up to 6 doses. The cost of the chargeable cycle depends on the patient's weight and costs us $6,800 for each dose. We can manage this by dipping into our savings for the 6 cycles but if the Keytruda drug works and he needs to continue it the cost is going to be very difficult. Our request for the government to put this drug on the PBS is not unreasonable given the reason why my husband contracted the disease was from asbestos fluff which in 1972 we had installed in the ceiling of our home as a good insulation. We most certainly would not have installed it if we had been privy to a letter that was sent in 1968 by the ACT Health Services Branch to the Department of the Interior (a Department of the Federal Government at that time) which in part said, 'The results of our investigations have disclosed what appears to be a serious exposure to asbestos dust. In view of the harmful nature of this substance the use of asbestos fluff for the purposes of insulating should be discontinued.' I have signed your petition and passed it to friends to sign. Hopefully the outcome will be positive. It would be wonderful if it was put on the PBS scheme. Thank you very much for your endeavours and we look forward to Keytruda being fast tracked on to the PBS!
