Reduce airplane noise from DCA over southbound neighborhoods

The Issue

We the undersigned object to the increase in the frequency of “South Flow” air traffic from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that flies directly over our neighborhoods generating disturbing noise levels. Since the summer of 2015, an increasing number of aircraft are passing overhead at 3,500 feet, under full power. At times, the rate of departing flights is one every minute. The resulting ground level noise peaks are more than 80 dB and are consistently greater than 70 dB. The disruption to our otherwise peaceful neighborhoods is unnecessary. We expect occasional aircraft noise living close to an airport, but the current concentration is discriminatory, especially when there is a ready alternative. North Flow traffic must remain over the Potomac River for 10 nautical miles before turning. In contrast, South Flow traffic is directed to turn west at the Wilson Bridge, five nautical miles from the runway. South Flow traffic should abide by the same requirement as North Flow flights, flying over the Potomac River for at least 10 nautical miles before turning. The 10-mile requirement would end discrimination between north and south neighborhoods. Flying further south and climbing higher before turning will also reduce ground level noise and move the flight path to less densely populated areas.
