I wanted to let you all know about an exciting new community initiative getting ready to launch in Ottawa. It's called Ottawa Reduces / Réduit Ottawa, and is inspired by the hugely successful movement in Toronto's Roncesvalles neighbourhood called Roncy Reduces (check them and their partners out if you're in the GTA!).

Here's an introduction to the initiative. Watch for more from Ottawa Reduces and similar initiatives popping up throughout Ontario. It's grassroots activities like these, together with important new government regulation that will help turn the tide on the plastic pollution crisis.

Our goal is to reduce waste and single-use plastics and packaging in our city by encouraging both consumers and businesses to practice waste reduction together.
The plastic we use and throw away everyday is poisoning our planet. Plastic garbage is found everywhere, including as microscopic pieces in our food and water. This is because plastic does not decompose - it only breaks down into smaller pieces. Plastic packaging is almost always new plastic, and we produce more of it than we can recycle (approximately 9% of plastic is recycled in Canada!)
The good news is, much of the plastic we use as consumers can be avoided. One easy way is to minimize single-use plastic by using reusable containers such as reusable coffee cups, water bottles, cloth or mesh bags for produce, cloth bags for bread and bulk food, reusable containers for takeout food and deli items such as meat, fish and cheese and of course use a reusable shopping bag.
We are inviting businesses throughout Ottawa to participate in this initiative by displaying our Ottawa Reduces sticker at the door and accepting customers’ reusable containers whenever possible.
In return, we will promote all participating businesses on our social media platforms and at future Ottawa Reduces events, including at workshops and other special events.
We hope you’ll join us in trying to work together as customers and businesses to make a difference!

Notre but est de réduire les déchets de plastique à usage unique dans notre ville en encourageant aussi bien les consommateurs que les entreprises à pratiquer la réduction des déchets en commun.
Le plastique que nous utilisons empoisonne notre planète. Les déchets de plastique se retrouvent partout, des océans aux glaciers, et sous forme de micro-plastiques dans notre eau et notre alimentation. Le plastique ne se décompose pas, il ne fait que s’éroder en morceaux de plus en plus petits. Les emballages en plastique ne sont quasiment jamais du plastique recyclé, et nous produisons bien plus de plastique que nous n’en recyclons. Seulement 9% du plastique est recyclé au pays.
La bonne nouvelle est que beaucoup du plastique que nous utilisons en tant que consommateurs peut être évitée. Prenez l’habitude d’éviter les plastiques à usage unique en utilisant des contenants réutilisables tels que gourdes et tasses à café réutilisables, des sacs de tissus pour pain, fruits ou légumes, vos propres contenants pour les aliments en vrac, la viande, le poisson ou encore quand vous prenez à emporter au restaurant.
Nous invitons les commerçants d’Ottawa à participer à notre initiative en affichant leur autocollant Ottawa Réduit à leur porte et en acceptant les contenants de leurs clients quand c’est possible.
En échange, nous ferons la promotion de tous les commerces participants sor nos réseaux sociaux et dans les futurs événements de Ottawa Réduit.
