We, Ukrainians residing in Sweden, express our sincere gratitude for the support and opportunities extended to our community. Many of us have integrated into Swedish society: we work, pay taxes, own or rent homes, study, and share the country’s values. We are independent, responsible, and contribute to Sweden’s development.

At the same time, many of our relatives—especially elderly parents or parents in need of their children’s care—remain in Ukraine.

We are aware that Sweden already has a family reunification programme for parents. However, in practice this possibility is almost unattainable: even very elderly and frail parents are often refused. This leaves people who have both the means and the willingness to care for their loved ones unable to bring them into a safe environment.

We emphasise that temporary residence options do not solve the problem. They are time-limited and once again expose elderly people to the risk of separation. When there is a real possibility to live with adult children on a permanent basis and to receive proper care from them, this should be lawful and feasible.

We therefore call on the Swedish authorities to:

• Simplify and humanise the process of family reunification with parents.
• Approve applications where children have a stable income and can guarantee suitable housing and care.
• Provide a pathway to permanent residence in Sweden for parents alongside their children, rather than only temporary residence.

We are not requesting pensions or social support from the state for our parents. All responsibility for care, maintenance, and well-being will rest entirely with the children. We ask only for the right to live together with our closest family members and to give our parents a dignified old age close to their family.

Ми, українці, які проживають у Швеції, щиро дякуємо за підтримку та можливості, надані нашій громаді. Багато з нас інтегрувалися в шведське суспільство: працюємо, сплачуємо податки, володіємо або орендуємо житло, навчаємося та поділяємо цінності країни. Ми самостійні, відповідальні та робимо внесок у розвиток Швеції.

Водночас багато наших родичів — передусім батьки похилого віку або батьки, які потребують догляду своїх дітей — залишаються в Україні.

Ми знаємо, що у Швеції вже існує програма возз’єднання сім’ї з батьками. Однак на практиці ця можливість майже недосяжна: відмови отримують навіть дуже літні та немічні батьки. Це призводить до того, що люди, які мають і можливість, і щире бажання піклуватися про своїх рідних, не можуть забезпечити їм безпечні умови життя поруч із собою.

Ми наголошуємо, що тимчасові варіанти перебування проблеми не вирішують. Вони обмежені в часі та знову наражають літніх людей на ризик розлуки. Коли є реальна можливість жити з дорослими дітьми на постійній основі та отримувати від них належний догляд, це має бути законно й здійсненно.

Тому ми звертаємося до органів влади Швеції з проханням:

• спростити та гуманізувати процедуру возз’єднання з батьками;
• схвалювати заяви у випадках, коли діти мають стабільний дохід і можуть гарантувати належне житло та догляд;
• надати шлях до постійного проживання для батьків поруч із дітьми у Швеції, а не лише тимчасові дозволи.

Ми не просимо пенсій чи соціальної підтримки від держави для наших батьків. Уся відповідальність за догляд, утримання та добробут повністю лежатиме на дітях. Ми просимо лише права жити поруч із найближчими людьми та забезпечити батькам гідну старість біля родини.
