Families deserve access to their local kindergarten!

The issue

Imagine traveling kilometres across town for kinder pick-ups and drop-offs — while your local kinder sits just metres from your front door.

Imagine your youngest child watching their older sibling going to kinder — waving to familiar educators, playing in the playground — only to tell your youngest that they can’t go there too.

This is a reality for families in the City of Glen Eira. Unlike surrounding councils, Glen Eira does not offer priority kindergarten placements for:

  • Families living in close proximity to a kindergarten service; or
  • Siblings of children who recently attended a kinder.

That means your child could be placed in a different kindergarten, even if you live right across the road from the kinder, or have been part of that kinder community for years.

The policy needs to change!

We’re calling on Glen Eira City Council to fix its kindergarten registration policy so that it aligns with other local councils, by:

  1. Giving priority of access to families living within a 2km radius of a kindergarten service; and
  2. Giving priority of access to families with a recent connection to a kindergarten service (eg, a sibling who attended in the previous 2 or 3 years).

This simple change would:

  • Support stronger emotional wellbeing and smoother transitions for children;
  • Reduce stress and logistical burdens for working families;
  • Strengthen kinder communities by keeping families connected;
  • Improve fairness in the enrolment process; and
  • Promote sustainability by reducing unnecessary travel.

Families deserve better. Children deserve better.

Let’s make sure Glen Eira’s kindergarten system supports families — not separates them.
