Create legislation mandating that Fairfax County Animal Shelter continue functioning as a No Kill Shelter, maintaining a live release rate of 90% or higher
The Issue
Fairfax County Animal Shelter is Fairfax County’s only publicly-funded, open access, municipal shelter. In a county of over 1.2 million residents, all animals in need, regardless of age, health or temperament are accepted. Currently, Animals are not euthanized due to a lack of space and there are no time limits for adoption.
The live release rate has increased dramatically in the last couple of years to over 95% and our shelter is proud to have one of the highest placement rates in the region. Euthanasia rates are half of what they were just a few short years ago, but we are worried they could rise again. Our shelter is now without a director, and the person who is appointed holds the key to continuing to save lives.
Without forward-thinking staff or a plan in place to require the shelter to uphold the standards it has achieved, the ground we’ve fought so hard to gain could be lost.
Help the animals of Fairfax County by encouraging and lobbying the Board of Supervisors to create initiatives and policy to ensure that we remains part of the "No Kill" community! Our goal is to get Fairfax County to create a legislative mandate that will require the Fairfax County Animal Shelter to continue functioning with a 90% live release rate or higher!
Please sign the petition and then write a letter, call, or email your local Supervisor letting them know you support this issue!
