Dietitians are exm
A new study came out showing how "Medically Tailored Groceries" showed improvement in Type 2 Diabetes patients in a RCT.
Effects of a “Food Is Medicine” Intervention on Glucose Control Among Medicaid-Insured Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Controlled Trial https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.125.077982
Medical Nutrition Therapy + Food Security can look like this in real life. Having food choices support diabetes management can have large effects!
Dietitians were offered to support the people. Only 1 in 5 took part in counseling sessions. When people are financially insecure, usually access to food is the focus understandably. Yet, Dietitians can help with their food choices as part of MNT. Yet we need to be accessible to all. The other issue: Many with chronic conditions are not referred to RDs due to lack of interdisciplinary teamwork. RDs are not recognized or misunderstood due to history or medical school training.
Those of us having worked in primary, community, & rural care have amazing skills to know resources and how to source healthier food choices within a tight budget. Our value is there. We are being overlooked and undervalued. We are the link between food choices/groceries and Medical Nutrition Therapy to support good health in Canadians.
THIS is where Registered Dietitians can help with food access & security. Lets see some of that $3.4 billion to Primary Care go to increasing Registered Dietitian positions! Ask your manager or join a Board of Directors of A FHT, CHC, AHC or OHT.
