Fair Marketplace for Small Sellers on Whatnot

Fair Marketplace for Small Sellers on Whatnot
The Issue
Story:
I’m a seller on Whatnot, and I’m speaking up because smaller shops are being pushed out by large-volume sellers who dominate visibility, inventory, and buyer attention.
Many of us small sellers have built 5-star reputations, strong communities, and genuine relationships with buyers — yet we are buried under massive inventory drops, silent streams, and unregulated selling practices that reduce trust across the platform.
This is not just about competition — it’s about fairness, transparency, and professionalism.
If nothing changes, small sellers will continue to disappear, and buyers will lose the authentic, engaging experience that made Whatnot successful in the first place.
What We’re Asking For:
1. Separate Seller Tiers
Create two marketplaces:
Small Sellers (under 10K followers)
Large Sellers (10K+ followers)
This gives smaller shops a fair chance to be seen and grow.
2. Limit Large Seller Inventory
Cap the number of items large sellers can list daily
OR
Require additional fees for exceeding limits
Prevents flooding and restores balance.
3. Fair Commission Structure
Lower fees for small sellers
Higher fees for large sellers who benefit from scale
Support growth instead of suppressing it.
4. Mandatory Live Selling Standards
All sellers must:
Be on camera and actively presenting
Describe every item being sold
Maintain professionalism:
No silent auctions
No walking around warehouses without engagement
No eating during streams (drinks allowed)
5. Transparency for Buyers
All sellers must provide accurate MSRP when possible
Large sellers must disclose:
Approximate cost per item when selling bulk inventory
Clear distinction between cost and value
Buyers deserve honesty.
6. Stricter Rules for Large Sellers
Greater accountability due to higher volume and visibility
Stronger enforcement of platform standards
Why This Matters
Small sellers are the heart of Whatnot. We:
Engage with our buyers
Build real communities
Provide honest, interactive shopping experiences
Without changes, the platform risks becoming oversaturated, impersonal, and unfair.
