Fair Contribution for Safer Roads

The Issue

As a driver in the UK, specifically London, I have experienced firsthand the increasing frustration caused by reduced lanes to accommodate cycle lanes. This unnecessary traffic congestion has made driving tedious and time-consuming. Therefore, I am starting this petition to advocate for a small fee that would require cyclists to contribute to road tax.

While cycling is an eco-friendly mode of transportation that promotes health and reduces pollution, it is important to acknowledge that cyclists also benefit from well-maintained roads. As drivers pay road tax to fund the construction and maintenance of these roads, it seems only fair that cyclists should also contribute their share.

Implementing a small fee for cyclists would not only help alleviate some of the financial burden on drivers but could also be utilized towards improving cycling infrastructure. By investing in safer cycle paths and better signage, we can encourage more people to adopt cycling as a means of transportation while ensuring their safety on our roads.

According to statistics from Transport for London (TfL), there has been a significant increase in cycling across the city over recent years. In 2019 alone, there were approximately 730,000 daily bike journeys made within Greater London (source: TfL). With such high numbers of cyclists utilizing our road network, it is essential that they contribute towards its upkeep.

Some argue that implementing a fee for cyclists may discourage people from choosing this environmentally friendly mode of transport. However, studies have shown that even with nominal fees in place, cycling rates remain high when compared to other forms of transport (source: The Guardian). Therefore, it is unlikely that such fees would deter individuals who are already committed to cycling as their preferred method of commuting or leisure activity. Also these fees pale in comparison to what people pay on a monthly basis for their cars minus petrol/diesal.

By introducing this contribution system fairly and transparently through appropriate legislation or regulation changes at both local and national levels across the UK, we can ensure all road users are contributing equitably towards maintaining our road infrastructure. This will not only benefit drivers but also enhance the overall safety and experience for cyclists themselves.

Let's come together to advocate for a fair and balanced approach that acknowledges the shared responsibility we all have in maintaining our roads. Sign this petition to support the implementation of a small fee for cyclists, contributing to road tax and promoting safer roads for everyone.

Thank you for your support!
