Petition Facebook to Start an Environmental News Section
The Issue
The Earth. It’s the only home we’ve got. At least until we figure out this whole Mars thing. And until we do, it’s vital that we take care of this planet, or at least know what’s going on here. In this difficult, fast paced time we live in, it’s easy for big issues, like climate change and mass extinction, to take a back seat to more immediate concerns and distractions. But what’s happening with our planet affects us all, economically, national security-wise, and just in terms of making sure we have a nice, clean place to live. It shouldn’t be the only conversation we’re having, but it is a conversation that should be front and center.
That’s why Facebook should have a trending topics section dedicated to news about earth and the environment. Right now, most environmental news comes out on the politics and science and technology feeds, but that's really not where it belongs. More importantly, making environmental news compete with other stories of the day leaves a whole lot out. The world’s largest social media platform should have a place where people can find out the most important things going on with our planet on a day to day basis.
The two specific things asked of this feed are that it
a) Keeps with Facebook's mission to root out fake news by acknowledging the reality of man-made climate change.
b) Is built to be a place for information about the planet, as opposed to videos of cute animals, which based on the nature of the internet, is what it would undoubtedly become if this was not kept in mind.
With the funding of the EPA and the work of objective climate scientists at risk, it is crucial that we have a place for accurate information about the health of our planet at our disposal. If done properly, Facebook can provide that, and it should. Because honestly, if we can't insure the safety of our planet, all that other news in the realm of politics, science and technology, even sports and entertainment, isn’t worth a damn.
