The Issue

As a student who frequently stays late nights at the UC Santa Barbara library, I am deeply frustrated by the fact that the hours have been diminished to no longer include the later hours of the evening. The importance of having a reliable space to study late at night cannot be overstated. Many students, like myself, find themselves needing the tranquility of the library to focus without the daytime distractions, as I have trouble finding a quiet space to study at home or in Isla Vista. Davidson Library used to be a reliable space where I could finish late-night assignments and work on group projects with peers, or go to before class or midterms, which start at 8:00am, to print out last minute papers or do early interviews on East Coast timing.

Currently, the UCSB library's limited operational hours restrict the academic potential of students who require a quiet place to study around the clock. Given that a significant number of students reside on or near campus, optimizing library hours to meet their needs is both practical and essential. UCSB is known for its rigorous academic programs, and students deserve access to resources that accommodate their demanding schedules. Other major UC schools, such as UC Berkeley and UCLA, offer 24/7 library services, recognizing the diverse needs of their student populations. These are well-regarded academic institutions and UCSB should follow suit to enhance its  overall academic environment.

Extended library hours would provide necessary support to students during critical times, especially during midterms, which especially on the quarter system often hold a similar or even greater level of grade percentage than finals, when stress levels peak and the demand for study spaces surges. Additionally, having the library open around the clock ensures that students with non-traditional schedules, whether due to work, family obligations, or sleep patterns, have consistent access to vital resources.

We urge the administration to consider the profound positive impact that a 24/7 library could have on student performance and wellbeing. Reverting back to the old 24/7 system would not only align UCSB with other high-ranking institutions but also demonstrate a commitment to student success and academic excellence.
