The Issue

As a working nighttime student attending Illinois Central College (ICC), balancing work, studies, and personal life presents considerable challenges. One major issue I face, along with many of my fellow nighttime students, is the lack of accessibility to essential services that daytime students enjoy, particularly the much-needed availability of a convenient coffee shop on campus.

Currently, the Starbucks located at ICC closes too early, leaving nighttime students without the option to grab a coffee or a quick snack during long study sessions or classes. This limited access creates an uneven playing field, as caffeine and light meals contribute significantly to maintaining focus and energy levels crucial for effective learning and productive study sessions.

According to a study by the National Center for Education Statistics, roughly one-fourth of all college students in the United States are balancing work and school, a statistic likely reflected at ICC. Our academic success should not be hindered by the unavailability of a simple resource like the on-campus Starbucks, which is critical for our concentration and efficiency after long work hours.

I propose extending the operating hours of Starbucks to better cater to the needs of nighttime students like me. By aligning the hours more closely with our class schedules, ICC would demonstrate a profound understanding and support for all its students by acknowledging that education isn't a nine-to-five endeavor.

This change would not only show compassion towards the unique struggles of nighttime students but also enhance the overall learning environment on campus by ensuring every student has equal access to necessary facilities.

Join me in urging Illinois Central College to extend the Starbucks hours. Let's create a more supportive and inclusive campus environment for all ICC students. Please sign this petition to make a positive change in our academic community.
