Extend the PATCO Speedline to 40th Street for Better Connectivity

Extend the PATCO Speedline to 40th Street for Better Connectivity
The Issue
In 2021, a proposal was made by the City of Philadelphia to extend the PATCO Speedline westward to University City district via a new rail tunnel under the Schuylkill River. The rapidly-growing University City district, home to major institutions like the University of Pennsylvania and several significant hospitals, was identified as a potential terminus at the 40th Street Trolley Portal. Despite this promising proposal aimed at improving connectivity and transportation efficiency in our city, we find ourselves in 2024 with no progress made.
The expansion of PATCO Speedline is not just about extending railway lines; it's about enhancing lives. It means shorter commute times for thousands of Philadelphians who work or study in University City. It means better access to healthcare facilities for those who need it most. And importantly, it will contribute significantly towards reducing traffic congestion and air pollution levels in our city.
According to data from American Public Transportation Association (APTA), public transportation systems like PATCO save approximately 37 million metric tons of CO2 annually - equivalent to if New York City stopped using electricity for a year! Furthermore, every billion dollars invested in public transportation supports and creates more than 50,000 jobs.
We urge you to support this petition demanding that local authorities prioritize and expedite the proposed expansion of PATCO Speedline westward up till 40th street. Let's unite for better connectivity, improved quality of life, job creation opportunities and environmental sustainability! Sign this petition today!
