Extend the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry: Let Justice Run Its Full Course
The Issue
PETITION TO THE PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA: EXTEND THE MADLANGA COMMISSION OF INQUIRY
To: His Excellency, The President of the Republic of South Africa
From: The Citizens of South Africa
We, the undersigned citizens of South Africa, respectfully petition for the extension of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Why this matters to every South African:
1. The work is incomplete. The Commission was established to investigate allegations of criminality, corruption, and political interference in law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Stopping the inquiry before all evidence is examined would undermine public confidence and deny victims the justice they deserve.
2. Accountability cannot be rushed. Complex investigations into state capture, organized crime networks, and systemic abuse of power take time. An arbitrary deadline must not be used to protect those implicated or to bury the truth.
3. Public trust is at stake. South Africans from all communities, provinces, and backgrounds have a right to a criminal justice system that is independent, transparent, and free from political interference. Extending the Commission shows government’s commitment to that principle.
Our Demands:
1. Extend the Commission’s mandate for a sufficient period to complete all investigations, hear all relevant witnesses, and issue comprehensive findings and recommendations.
2. Adequate resources and independence to ensure the Commission can do its work without obstruction.
3. Protection for witnesses and whistleblowers who come forward with information in the public interest.
4. Regular public updates on the Commission’s progress to maintain transparency and public oversight.
We call on all South Africans regardless of political affiliation, race, language, or background to support this petition. Justice delayed is justice denied. Justice cut short is justice betrayed.
Signed,
The People of South Africa
