Breakthrough research has pushed our campaign to it's next stage.....it's time to call for a outright ban on using oil-based plastic in nappies.

We have known for years that alternative materials to oil-based plastic could be used in nappies and they perform as well as standard materials. There was no need to continue to use these harmful and unhealthy materials, but big brands continued to promote the idea that investing in recycling for plastic nappies was the only possible answer to the end-of-life problem. They did not want to change their manufacturing and impact their profit margins.

But new research shows that enzymatic treatment and composting of plant based nappies is not only possible, but also the best environmental solution on all 18 environmental measures. Plant based nappies can be 'dissolved' in cellulase and treated in AD composters within days.

It is therefore time to call for a ban on the use of oil-based plastic in nappy manufacture. Just as with wet wipes a few years ago, we need the government to start the consultation and set a timeline for the ban to be enforced to motivate the big brands to make the switch. It is entirely possible for all nappies to be made using these new materials and be fully composted in future, but they will not invest in the R&D and make the switch on their own.
