The main objection from UK councils to placing compostable nappies and wipes in the green bins is that the harmful bacteria from the human waste would pose a hygiene risk.
Taking this onboard, we have partnered with a private firm to trial an in-home composter for bio-based eco nappies and wipes which would create a sterile mulch within a short period of time which could be placed in green bins without effecting a hygiene risk.
Building on the company's successful in-home food composter technology, we have launched a project to test whether the system would enable individuals to compost nappies and wipes to a sufficient degree to meet the council's requirements for sterilisation. If successful, this could provide an immediate solution for compostable products whilst we await a wider scale change and investment in industrial composting by DEFRA.
