The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and registered voters of British Columbia, express our concern over the lack of a recall process for municipal politicians between elections. While the Recall and Initiative Act allows registered voters to initiate the removal of a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), there is currently no similar mechanism for municipal elected officials, leaving our local communities without a means to address instances of misconduct or behavior inconsistent with their elected office.

In 2014, the municipal terms in British Columbia were extended to every four years, making it even more crucial for us to have the ability to hold our local representatives accountable for their actions throughout their tenure.

We believe that the Recall and Initiative Act, which empowers registered voters to collect signatures and initiate a recall process for MLAs, should be extended to include municipal politicians. This would provide a necessary check and balance, ensuring that those elected to city councils uphold the standards of integrity and accountability expected by their constituents.

By extending the Recall and Initiative Act to cover municipal positions, we aim to foster transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local governance. It is essential for the well-being of our communities that citizens have the ability to address concerns about the behavior and actions of their elected representatives.

We, the undersigned, call on the government of British Columbia to take prompt action to amend the Recall and Initiative Act, extending its application to cover municipal politicians. We believe this change is essential for the health of our local democracies and the overall trust in our elected officials.
