Extend Monday Lunch Periods at Rocklin High School
The Issue
At Rocklin High School, students are finding themselves caught in a daily struggle each Monday: lunch periods are too short for us to eat properly. Currently, we have only 12 minutes for lunch, which is simply not enough considering the time we spend in lines, often waiting up to 10 minutes, leaving us with scarcely 2 minutes to eat. As a result, many of us are rushed to finish our meals, often ending up hungry and having to discard intact, state-provided lunches. This isn't just a matter of bad timing; it's impacting our health, well-being, and academic performance.
The need for an extended lunch period is immediate and critical. Students are our future leaders, thinkers, and innovators, and for us to succeed in our academic and extracurricular endeavors, we need proper nutrition and adequate time to rest and refuel. Numerous studies have shown that adequate lunch breaks contribute significantly to students' cognitive functioning, energy levels, and overall productivity. Being able to eat without rush boosts our concentration and performance throughout the school day and leads to better academic outcomes.
Research from the National Education Association indicates that students need a minimum of 20 minutes of sitting time to consume their meals healthily and enjoyably. Other schools around the country that have extended their lunch periods report not only improved academic performance but also enhanced student morale and reduced stress levels. Rocklin High should follow suit and prioritize the health and academic success of its students.
Therefore, we are calling on the Rocklin Unified School District to extend Monday lunch periods to at least 20 to 25 minutes. This will allow all students adequate time to eat, socialize, and recharge, leading to a more productive school day. Longer lunches also reduce food waste, as students have ample time to eat their meals, and they can better utilize the nutritious state-provided food.
Together, we can enact a positive change to create a healthier and more encouraging environment for Rocklin High students. Please sign this petition to let our voices be heard and to support our call for longer lunch breaks on Mondays. Your signature can help ensure that students have the time they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
