Extend DeviantArt title character limit to 400

The Issue

As a long-time member of the DeviantArt community, I’ve poured countless hours into creating, curating, and sharing digital art that reflects my passion, imagination, and personal journey. But one persistent limitation has continued to frustrate me and many others: the restrictive title character limit.

Currently, DeviantArt only allows a maximum of 50 characters in artwork titles. This constraint not only stifles creativity but also hinders clarity, discoverability, and meaningful expression. For artists who create complex narratives, crossover pieces, or thematic series, 50 characters simply isn’t enough.

📖 My Story
I’ve been active on DeviantArt for over a decade, sharing fan art, original characters, and multimedia projects that span multiple genres—from historical fiction to sci-fi crossovers. One of my most ambitious projects, Multiverse: Revenge of the Axis, includes dozens of chapters and character arcs. But every time I upload a new piece, I struggle to fit the full context into the title. I’ve had to abbreviate, cut out key names, or remove thematic tags that would help viewers understand the work at a glance.

This isn’t just a personal inconvenience—it’s a barrier to storytelling. Titles are the first impression. They’re how viewers decide whether to click, engage, or explore further. When we’re forced to truncate our titles, we lose nuance, emotion, and sometimes even the meaning behind the piece.

📊 Facts & Statistics
Over 75 million registered users rely on DeviantArt to showcase their work. A significant portion of these users create serialized content, fanfiction, or crossover art that demands longer titles.

Title length limits on other platforms:

YouTube: Up to 100 characters

Twitter/X: Up to 280 characters per post

Wattpad: Allows long story titles and chapter headings

Search engine optimization (SEO) benefits from descriptive titles. Longer titles improve visibility in search results and help users find relevant content more easily.

User feedback on forums and comment threads consistently highlights frustration with the 50-character limit. Many users resort to awkward abbreviations or add context in the description, which isn’t always visible in previews.

💡 Why 400 Characters?
We’re not asking for unlimited space. We’re asking for a reasonable expansion—400 characters—that allows:

Full names of characters, series, and crossover elements

Episode or chapter numbers with subtitles

Thematic tags or emotional cues

Multilingual titles for global audiences

This change would empower artists to present their work more professionally and meaningfully. It would also align DeviantArt with modern content platforms that prioritize user expression and accessibility.

🗣️ Community Voices
I’ve spoken with dozens of fellow artists, writers, and curators who echo this sentiment. Some have even left DeviantArt for platforms with more flexible formatting. We don’t want to leave—we want to grow here. We want DeviantArt to evolve with us.

📬 Call to Action
We respectfully urge the DeviantArt Executive Team, Product Management Team, and Community Support Leads to consider this reform. A simple adjustment to the title character limit could have a profound impact on user satisfaction, content quality, and platform engagement.

Let’s make DeviantArt a place where creativity isn’t confined by character counts.
