The Issue

Recovery and breakdown drivers and technicians provide a crucial 24/7 service, working alongside emergency services. They face the same hazards on all types of roads and under various conditions, similar to those encountered by emergency services personnel. Despite this, they are currently not eligible for the benefits provided by the Blue Light Card scheme.

The Blue Light Card provides discounts across a range of retailers to those in the NHS, Emergency Services, Social Care sector, and Armed Forces. However, recovery drivers and technicians who also risk their lives daily are excluded from this benefit.

According to statistics from the Department for Transport (DfT), roadside workers face significant risks; between 2015-2019 there were over 200 serious injuries or fatalities involving roadside workers in Great Britain alone (source: DfT). This demonstrates that these professionals operate in high-risk environments akin to other emergency service roles.

By extending eligibility for the Blue Light Card scheme to include recovery drivers and technicians we can recognize their contributions more appropriately. It's time we acknowledge their sacrifices with more than just words but tangible benefits that improve their quality of life.

Please sign this petition if you agree that recovery drivers and technicians should be included in the Blue Light Card scheme.
