The Issue

Since the Heartland Flyer from Fort Worth to Oklahoma City is likely to be discontinued, the states of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma should take proactive steps by collaborating and extending the Missouri River Runner train west of Kansas City to Oklahoma City.

Amtrak's Missouri River Runner currently provides a vital service between St. Louis and Kansas City, stopping at scenic hubs and fostering connections along the way. Yet, its extension could unlock even greater potential for regional connectivity, enhancing economic opportunities, tourism, and convenience for many travelers across three states. By extending the Missouri River Runner further westward to Oklahoma City, officials can ensure that residents and businesses do not lose access to critical rail infrastructure and maintain strong economic and social ties to the rest of the Midwest.

The discontinuation of the Heartland Flyer would leave a significant transportation gap that could negatively impact communities relying on public transport for economic activities, education, healthcare services, and familial connections. Keeping this network intact by extending the service would help sustain the economic vitality and quality of life across multiple regions.

Realistically, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have the capacity to come together to assess feasibility studies, investments, and partnerships needed for such an extension. Acting on this proposal is necessary to preserve and enhance inclusive and comprehensive connectivity in parts of the United States facing critical gaps in public transportation networks.

Congress could play a role by recognizing the importance of regional rail and offering support and funding for the proposed extension, contributing to the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail. Such backing would be instrumental in exploring viable solutions for maintaining and expanding essential rail services.

This moment presents an opportunity for progress and innovation in public transportation, one that should not be missed by local and federal leaders. Sign this petition to urge leadership in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma, along with federal authorities, to take necessary action towards this critical development.
