My story is not exceptional among the thousands of drivers in London who depend on driving private hire vehicles for their livelihood. I submitted my application for licence renewal to Transport for London (TfL) five months ago. However, I, along with my three young children and my wife, am still waiting in the lurch, struggling to pay our bills, and at my wits' end, as I am not receiving any update or information about my application.

Similar stories echo among numerous family breadwinners forced into joblessness due to TfL's inefficiency and lack of transparency. Many drivers have been jobless for protracted periods, haunted by the recurring question of how they will look after their families and pay their bills.

Failure to renew private hire licences in a timely manner is not only causing undue hardship to drivers and their families but also affecting the overall quality of private hire vehicle services in London. According to the Licensed Private Hire Car Association, at least 40,000 drivers in London are affected by this lack of action from TfL (source: LPHCA).

We demand immediate action from TfL. This misconduct should not be allowed to continue. We call for greater transparency and expedience in the application processes for renewal of private hire licences. We also demand appropriate measures to end this unofficial harassment of drivers and better support for hardworking people like myself who are merely trying to make a living for their families.
