Expand the Rutgers Busing System

The Issue

The Rutgers buses are comically overcrowded and unreliable. The population at RU-New Brunswick campus has swelled to almost 43,000 students. Students are not allowed to park on different campuses (or risk contributing to the over 45,000 parking tickets dished out yearly). Classes, professors, events, and other resources are spread out among the 4 campuses, meaning students are required to travel between campuses almost daily. Given the unreliability of the buses, students are often late or miss class entirely.

This is unacceptable. We are pushing administration to address this in several key ways:

  1. Expand the Rutgers Fleet and hire more drivers. The busing system is overwhelmed in busy times, when students have the most need to get to class on time. The smaller additions to the bus fleet, while helpful, are insufficient to provide bus service to students.
  2. Improve tracking services and provide information on driver breaks to allow students the ability to efficiently use the bus system. The new PassioGo system is more difficult to use and more unreliable than TransLoc. As well, the Rutgers app which is supposed to provide bus information is not functional.
  3. Rework Routes to provide more service. Coverage has been reduced over the past several years and it severely limits students' ability to get around campus. For example, students at the Starkey, Newell, and Vorhees apartments must walk a half mile to the nearest bus stop that is serviced by ANY BUS LINE other than the EE. Many stops have been closed, we want them reopened.
  4. Add Routes such as a loop around Cook/Douglass Campus, which is a mile across and has no such commuter route. This policy decision does not provide students with disabilities, injuries, or other mobility issues with the transportation they need.
