The issue

In a country as vast as Australia, where the nearest authorised service centre may be hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away, accessing timely vehicle repair and maintenance is not just inconvenient, it can be a significant logistical and financial burden. This is particularly true for motorcycle owners, who often face limited options due to the small number of authorised service providers.

At present, the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme Act 2021 applies only to passenger vehicles and light goods vehicles. Motorcycles, however, remain excluded from this legislation. This omission places motorcycle owners at a disadvantage, restricting their access to affordable, timely, and qualified servicing options, particularly in regional and remote areas.

Motorcycles, while a smaller segment of the market, play a vital role in Australia’s transport ecosystem. When local workshops lose their manufacturer affiliations or are denied access to essential service data, riders are left with few choices. This results in higher maintenance costs, longer wait times, and in some cases, unsafe riding conditions due to deferred servicing.

Amending this legislation to include motorcycles would:

  • Empower independent repairers with access to essential diagnostic and service information
  • Improve safety and convenience for riders across Australia
  • Encourage healthy competition and consumer choice in the motorcycle industry
  • Support sustainability by keeping more vehicles on the road
  • Reduce reliance on brand-affiliated dealers, especially in areas where none exist

We call on the Australian Government to extend the protections of the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme Act 2021 to cover motorcycles. Fair access to repair data is not just a right, it is a necessity for rider safety, industry fairness, and regional equity.

Sign this petition today to help level the playing field for motorcycle owners and ensure that all Australians, no matter where they live or what they ride, have access to safe, affordable, and reliable vehicle repair services.
