Expand the List of Animals to Report in Car Accidents to Include Cats and Foxes
The Issue
I am a self-proclaimed guardian of God's creations, inspired by figures like Noah and Steve Irwin. I consider it my vocation on Earth to protect and cherish all creatures, which includes our beloved pets, cats, and foxes that are considered family members by many. I am advocating for the government to include cats and foxes in the list of animals that must be reported to the police if injured or killed in a car accident. In the UK, the law stipulates that road traffic accidents involving dogs, horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys, and mules must be reported as quickly as possible, regardless of the animal's condition post-accident. Cats and foxes, despite being domesticated and cherished as family members, are disregarded from this protective measure. Cats alone make up 26% of UK households, and the data suggests they are victims of more road traffic accidents than recorded, as drivers currently aren't obligated to report hitting these creatures (PFMA, 2020). This legislation's current form doesn't serve as an act of good guardianship towards all God’s creatures but selectively abandons our smaller but equally beloved pets. Ghosting after hitting a cat or a fox isn't just morally questionable; it should be legally inadmissible. In the spirit of fairness and in honor of all God's creations, we implore the government to include cats and foxes in the list of animals that must be reported when involved in car accidents. Please sign the petition to manifest change and protect our cherished pets better.
