As a someone with coeliac’s disease, I am frustrated with the limitations faced by coeliacs and other gluten-averse individuals in the UK when dining out at McDonald's. For years, I have looked forward to enjoying a delightful gluten-free burger and fries on holiday in countries across the globe in one of the 11+ countries that provide gluten free menu (such as Spain, Italy, Finland, Norway, Sweden etc) . But upon my return to the UK, this enjoyment evaporates due to the lack of gluten-free options here.

According to a BBC report, approximately 15% of UK adults (an enormous demographic) are now avoiding gluten or wheat for health or personal reasons. This translates to millions of potential customers who are being underserved by McDonald's UK, despite the company offering gluten-free options in so many other countries. This inconsistency is not just an inconvenience to those unable to eat gluten but a missed opportunity for McDonald's UK to appeal to a broader audience and demonstrate commitment to customer inclusivity.

Expanding the menu to include gluten-free options is not an unrealistic ambition. In countries like Italy and Spain, McDonald's has successfully implemented dedicated preparation areas and cross-contact protocols to safely serve gluten-free meals. By following these international best practices, McDonald's UK can introduce a select range of gluten-free items, ensuring those with gluten sensitivities are not sidelined.

This change would not only address the dietary needs of millions but would also embody a message of inclusivity and care for customer wellbeing. We urge McDonald's UK to prioritize accessibility and option diversity for their gluten-free patrons.
