Expand Light Rail/Streetcar Lines in Atlanta for Better Connectivity

The Issue

For the longest time, I have held an unwavering belief that the city of Atlanta could greatly benefit from an additional two or three light rail or streetcar lines. While I am not a local of Atlanta or its surrounding areas, I am gravely passionate about this course. This belief stems from the understanding that these streetcar lines can augment connectivity across the different corners of the city, even to areas beyond the reach of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) subway.

Atlanta, a bustling city with a population surpassing 500,000, faces significant challenges in traffic congestion. The Brookings Institution asserts that the average resident spends a grueling 59.4 hours annually in traffic. By endorsing the establishment of additional light rail/streetcar lines, we implore the city to take a proactive measure towards reducing this traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

This effort also seeks to alleviate the current pressures on the MARTA system, which in 2018 carried approximately 230,400 passengers daily on their rail lines. A growing city of Atlanta's caliber requires a transportation system that can balance this increasing load and provide a reasonable, comfortable commute to its citizens.

In a city known for its legacy of civil rights and innovative city planning, let's take this step together. Let's advocate for more light rail or streetcar lines, better connectivity, fair travel times, and ultimately, a better Atlanta for all. Stand with me today and sign this petition.
