The Issue
As someone who has spent the last 20 years advocating for equality and sharing information related to special education, I have witnessed firsthand how Spanish speaking communities are systematically marginalized and denied access to the tools and learning opportunities that facilitate the education of their children. Our children are not being given the same chances in school, often denied access to crucial therapies because families are unsure of how to advocate during pivotal IEP meetings due to language barriers.
San Diego University , is a leading institution in our area with resources to help neutralize this systemic problem but only provides the 6 weeks SELAS seminar training in English, we implore you to increase the accessibility of your special education training to Spanish-speaking communities. We believe everyone deserves access to knowledge and the tools necessary to improve the lives and education of their children.
Educational disparity is not a new issue. The National Education Association reports that Hispanic students are drastically underrepresented in gifted programs, an issue that would surely improve with adequate training for the parents of these wonderful children. While progress is being made across the country, we remain in dire need of concentrated efforts from respected entities like San Diego University.
By providing educational training and workshops in Spanish, San Diego University can help to bridge this gap, ensuring all children in our community have the opportunity for a superior education. This is not just presenting workshops in Spanish or about translating materials into Spanish, it is about fostering an environment of inclusivity and respect for diversity.
Every child deserves equal educational opportunities, regardless of their parents' primary spoken language. Please stand with us in urging San Diego University to expand their inclusive Spanish-language special education training programs. Sign our petition and lend your voice to this crucial cause.
