Exempt minors from taxes until granted voting rights

Exempt minors from taxes until granted voting rights
The issue
We are three Year 12 students from Rotorua Girls' High School and we all have part-time jobs. We pay taxes. Despite contributing to the tax system, we do not have a voice in determining how our tax dollars are utilised because we are not old enough to vote. This situation feels unjust and inequitable; it is time for change.
Minors like us are required to pay taxes on any income we earn, yet we remain powerless in influencing political and governmental decisions. This lack of agency over funds that are deducted from our wages seems unfair and contradictory to the fundamental principles of democracy. Young people, especially those under 18, are key beneficiaries of government services like education, healthcare, and transportation, but are still deprived of the opportunity to participate in the electoral process that shapes these services.
We aim to bring this issue to the attention of policymakers and urge them to implement legislation exempting minors under 18 from income tax unless they are granted voting rights. This change will acknowledge the contributions of young workers while respecting the democratic principle of 'no taxation without representation.'
We are calling on our community, educators, parents, and allies to support our mission. Sign this petition to join our fight for fairness and to encourage our government to consider policy adjustments that justly balance taxation and representation for all citizens, regardless of age. Together, we can inspire legislative change that reflects the voices and rights of young people in New Zealand.
